Our Doctor

​​​​​Dr. Shane Foster is the owner of Athens Eye Care and has been a doctor in the practice for over 15 years. He is a native of Athens County and was a patient in this practice since childhood. Dr. Foster graduated cum laude from the Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2008. He also attended Ohio University where he received a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a B.A. in Spanish.

Dr. Foster sees patients of all ages with various ocular conditions. He is experienced in fitting specialty contact lenses for patients with corneal abnormalities or complex prescriptions. He also has an interest in pediatric optometry and the crucial role that vision plays in literacy, learning, and academic success.

Dr. Foster is the Past President of the Ohio Optometric Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He is the current President of the Ohio Optometric Foundation and oversees the Ohio Children’s Vision Initiative, which provides charitable eye care programs to children all across the state. He is a member of the American Optometric Association and volunteers on the State Government Relations Committee. Dr. Foster also chairs the Vision to Learn Ohio Advisory Board, which oversees mobile eye exam programs operating in the state. For his volunteerism and leadership within the profession of optometry, Dr. Foster was presented with the Early Professional Achievement Award from the Ohio State University College of Optometry in 2023.

​​​​​Dr. Rachel LeFebvre is a two-time graduate of the Ohio State University. She received her BS in Biology in 2007 and her Optometry Doctorate in 2011. Upon graduation, she furthered her education and completed an ocular disease residency through the Chillicothe and Columbus Veteran Affairs systems.

Dr. LeFebvre is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Ohio Optometric Association where she is currently serving as Zone Governor.

Dr. LeFebvre is a native of Southeastern, Ohio and lives in the region with her husband, two children, and pets.

Dr. LeFebvre is accepting new and returning patients for comprehensive eye care. Her services include diabetic exams, infant eye exams, contact lens fittings, and management of ocular diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and eye emergencies (red eyes).

​​​​​Dr. Sherry (Crawford) Compston is a graduate from The Ohio State University where she received her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctor of Optometry degrees. She also completed an additional two-year Fellowship in Family Practice Optometry where she specialized in Ocular Disease and Pediatrics. After completing her residency at Ohio State, she was invited to join the full-time faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor and the manager of the Binocular Vision and Pediatrics Clinic.

Even after she left this position, she never lost her ties to OSU and continues to be an Associated Faculty Member to this day. In 1997, she moved to Athens to join the practice of Drs. Tom and Susan Quinn, where she worked with Dr. Foster when he was still a student! At Athens Eye Care, she continues to specialize in children, particularly those with developmental delays, “lazy eye” or who are struggling in school. She also provides specialized care for adults with a history of Traumatic Brain Injuries or binocular vision disorders.

Dr. Compston is also employed with the US Department of Veteran’s Affairs, serving local Veteran’s in the Athens and Marietta Clinics, where she has gained extensive experience treating ocular diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma. Dr. Compston also works with Vision to Learn, a non-profit organization that provides free eye exams and glasses on the “Vision Van” that goes to local schools in Southeastern Ohio. Dr. Compston is also a member of Volunteer Optometric Services in Humanity International that participates in mission trips to underserved populations around the world.

​​​​​A native of Mountain Home, Idaho, Dr. Gibbons has been in the world of optometry nearly his entire life. His passion for eyecare developed while working for his father’s optometry clinic throughout high school and college. During this time, he was fortunate to experience multiple mission trips to South and Central America, providing ocular health exams and glasses to people in Ecuador, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Dr. Gibbons received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a language fluency certificate in Spanish from Brigham Young University. He went on to receive his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry, where he was a member of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO), Sports Vision Association (SVA), the Student Volunteers in Optometric Services to Humanity (SVOSH).

Dr. Gibbons’ clinical rotations included Sharp Eye Consultants P.A. in San Antonio, TX, where he attained skills in managing ocular diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, as well as diagnosing cataracts and performing peri-operative care. He also rotated through Eye Clinics of South Texas, working directly with ophthalmology and furthering his skills in glaucoma management and peri-operative care.

He completed a residency at Parkhurst NuVision in San Antonio, TX. Working side by side with ophthalmology, Dr. Gibbons learned to evaluate candidacy and recommend specific refractive surgeries such as LASIK, SMILE, PRK, EVO ICL, and refractive lens exchange to each individual patient. He gained valuable experience in selecting intraocular lens (IOL) powers, including monofocal, extended depth-of-focus, and multifocal lens implants for cataract surgery patients. Thanks to the high volume of patients, he further developed his pre- and post-operative co-management skills, along with managing a variety of ocular diseases.

When he isn’t at work, he enjoys going to the movies, riding roller coasters, and spending time with his wife and dog.
