HRT II - New Sight-Saving Technology

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in the United States---affecting about three million Americans. Unfortunately, up to half of them are unaware they have the disease. Glaucoma frequently develops without warning. Too often, treatment isn’t sought until irreversible vision loss has already occurred.

The key to preventing vision loss is early glaucoma detection. And since Drs. Quinn and Associates have recently acquired the Heidelburg Retina Tomograph II (HRT II), it has never been easier for patients to be diagnosed for this blinding disease---often before vision suffers.

The HRT II is a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope. It not only detects the very early stages of glaucoma, it also provides eye doctors with essential information for monitoring the disease in follow-up exams. By scanning the optic nerve and adjacent nerve fiber layer, the HRTII produces a three dimensional topographic. It generates extremely accurate, detailed data and comprehensive analysis that simply is not possible to obtain with traditional examinations.

The HRT II is fast, safe and usually does not require dilating the eye. While the patient sits comfortably in a stationary position, a laser scans the eye for just a few seconds at a lower energy level than that produced from a television screen.

The HRT II scan is not a part of our customary comprehensive examination. It is indicated only if you are presently treated for glaucoma, have been told you have a risk for the disease, or have an optic nerve defect. Our doctors are happy to discuss this exciting new technology with you at your next visit.
